New Delhi:
Indian entertainment Industry is booming like never before. People are now seeing
it as a viable career option and professionals have a better understanding of
it. Here is an exclusive dialogue with Indian entrepreneur, poet & artistic director Shubhra Bhardwaj. Founder, Managing Director of Ferriswheel Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.,
Shubhra is a pioneer in the field of Indian folk arts and has two decades of
experience in the field of sports, performing arts & entertainment. She
has to her credit executed some of the large scale events in India like - XIX
Common Wealth Games, South Asian Winter Games, Doha Asian Games, National Games
and Ticket to Bollywood to name a few. Shubhra has been
successfully conducting cultural exchange programs to various countries for
over 2 decades now. The cherry on the top is that her firm is conducting a
cultural exchange program in India with NASA.
1. What's
in store for the entertainment industry in 2014?
Ans: The future of the Indian entertainment in the country is very
bright. We have a massive cost effective skilled work force that is the
backbone of the entertainment industry. There is maturity in the audience’s
choice in terms of spending their money and free time. That shift is visible in
the success of EDMs, the public outreach festivals, comedy stores, large-scale
live public events. The event industry also offers
specialised career options like MICE, corporate, sports, talent management,
production, creative, operations, sports events, wedding planners to name a
few. So even within the industry there are innumerable options to choose from
offering huge scope of growth. There is also a
whole dynamic shift in the perception of the performing arts industry and for
us to be a part of this shift is very exciting.
2. What is the impact of the
upcoming budget on the entertainment industry?
Ans: The
entertainment industry in India is getting extremely growth oriented. The
market is maturing and new and old players in this sector are constantly trying
to design new revenue models. We were hoping that the Budget 2014 would make
provisions to incentivise this growth but it has hardly touched the entertainment industry. Entertainment in
MICE events has got tremendous potential not only to showcase international
events to our people but also at the same time, inform and enlighten the world
about India and its offerings. There is immense scope of growth in this sector
by offering incentives.
3. Throw some light on the ever-changing
dynamics of the entertainment industry and how IPs are going to be the next big
thing in the entertainment industry.
Ans: There
are new revenue models emerging and more job opportunities being created. The
future of the industry is in its IP’s. Companies are trying to find new avenues
for increased revenue and talent presentation. There is a tremendous amount of
growth in niche festivals & unusual entertainment offerings in the market. Every
company aims to own a successful IP today. While Wizcraft created IIFA, Sunburn
is Percept’s property. Ferriswheel owns a number of IPs as well like Worldfest and
Ticket to Bollywood.
4. Provide some inputs
and insights on event management as a career option.
Ans: It
is one of those fields that
give you ample opportunities for unleashing your creative potential. Event
management involves visualisation, creativity, meticulous planning and venue
management. This industry has gained momentum in the last few years due to the
change in marketing and advertising plans. Even the increase in demand of
professional socialising has acted as a boost for this field. Most events today
are organised by an event management company, with experts taking care of every
little detail — right from the colour scheme at the venue to the food and
drinks to the amusements and contests lined up for guests. It is almost like
making a wish and having it granted by an event manager.
There is no particular academic
qualification that is required for working in the field of event management. A
lot of specialized institutes like EMDI & NIEM Mumbai prepare you well for
a career in the field of event management. Even well known mass communication
schools like XIC (Mumbai), IIMC (Delhi), SIMC (Pune), Mudra Institute of
Communication, (Ahmedabad) help you develop your skills for this industry.
